Red Velvet Cake

This recipe introduces an unusual cake that you can have for dessert or as a snack during your day. Red Velvet cake is suitable for any day, event or celebration like a birthday party. You can also have it in a simple family gathering. No one can deny that there is nothing better than finishing off with a sweet. Besides I am sure that your loved ones will be thrilled to share it with you.

 

This cake is characterized by its special appearance. It is made in 4 layers with yummy frosting between each layer. We top this cake with crumbs made from the same cake. Do not worry when you read ‘layers’! We actually make one cake that we cut into even layers. This process makes the cake high and pleasing to the eye. The combination between the colours, white and red, is exquisite. Your guests will be surprised to see a red cake. This makes it unusually exceptional. Additionally, the texture of our cake is super tender thanks to many ingredients like buttermilk and vinegar. The later make it very spongy and soft. Moreover, the frosting layers allows the cake to be creamy and moist.

As far as the taste is concerned, I do not think that there are enough words to describe it. Nevertheless, I can say the mixture between the vanilla in the cake and frosting with other ingredients is super tasty. You and your guests will asks for seconds.

Although this cake takes approximately 90 minutes to be served, it is definitely worth the wait. Nevertheless, it does not take a lot of effort to prepare. You mainly mix all ingredients and you bake the cake. Assembling the cake can take a little time, but it is definitely easy. All the steps are well explained in the instructions’ section below. INGREDIENTS:

 

The cake:

 

  • 1 and 3/4 cups cake flour
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 and 1/2 Tbsps cocoa powder
  • 1 Tbsp gel red food colouring
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 2 tsps  vanilla extract (essence)
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp salt

 

The cream :

  • 1/2 cup cold heavy or whipping cream
  • 3 Tbsps of icing sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (essence)

 

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Heat the oven at 160 degrees Celsius.
  2. Prepare an 8-inch square cake pan by lining parchment paper in the bottom and greasing the sides with butter or oil.
  3. Mix sugar and oil in a large bowl. Add in the eggs and vanilla. Stir well.
  4. Mix in buttermilk and the red food colouring.
  5. In the same bowl, sift flour, cocoa powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt.  Combine to well incorporate everything.
  6. Add white vinegar and gently mix.
  7. Pour the mixture in the prepared pan and place it in the oven to bake for 50 minutes or until the toothpick comes out clean when inserted.
  8. Allow the cake to cool completely.
  9. While the cake is cooling, let us prepare the frosting. In a large bowl, beat in all three ingredients until you have a thick consistency
  10. When the cake is completely cooled, trim the top of the cake and cut the edges. (Save for later)
  11. To make 4 layers, cut the cake in half. Then, cut those halves into two.
  12. On your counter or directly into your serving plate, place the bottom of the cake and spread some frosting. Top with a layer of the cake and repeat the process until you finish with frosting.
  13. Take the edges and the top that you cut previously and make crumbs out of them.
  14. Sprinkle the face of the cake with some of those crumbs.
  15. Serve and enjoy!

 

Notes:

  • It is essential not to substitute or leave our any ingredient in this recipe.
  • Both buttermilk and vinegar are important.
  • While making the frosting, make sure that the heavy or whipping cream is extremely cold.

 

How to serve?

  • Cut into squares or rectangles and serve into individual plates.

 

How to store?

If you have any leftovers, keep them in an airtight container in the fridge. The sooner you have it, the better.
