This is a Polish-American dish that is great for dinner. This dish is quite surprising. It tastes like chicken, but we actually use pork, veal or both. Follow this recipe for more details on how to make this rich in protein dinner.

This fake chicken recipe is extraordinary. It is believed that it was originated during the Great Depression; back when chicken was rare and very expensive. That’s why it is used with any meat that you like, preferably pork or veal. They are cubed into 1.5 inch pieces and placed in halved skewers. They are seasoned with salt and pepper. Then, they are dipped in flour, eggs and breadcrumbs. They are first fried. Then, we proceed with cooking them in the oven. These meat skewers are quite tasty. You can use either normal salt or seasoned one. It depends on your preference. In addition to this, their texture is crunchy and tender at the same time. They are also quite appealing to the eye thanks to the golden brown color obtained from the cooking.  This makes people love them even more.

 

This dinner recipe is prepared in less than an hour with few ingredients only. Most of the latter can be found in your kitchen. In addition to this, you will not waste a lot of effort preparing it. They are prepare in 15 minutes and cooked in 30 minutes (5 minutes to 20 minutes in the oven and the remaining time is for frying). This is a very simple dinner idea that you can serve alone or with other side dishes. For suggestions of the latter, check below. INGREDIENTS:

  • 2.5 pounds of Pork and/or Veal (cubed into 1.5-inch pieces)
  • 2 beaten Eggs
  • 1 cup of all-purpose Flour
  • 1 and a 1/2 cup of Bread Crumbs
  • Salt or Seasoned Salt and Pepper
  • For Frying: oil

 

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Cut the wooden skewers in half.
  2. After cubing the meat into 1.5-inch pieces, put 2 or 3 pieces to a wooden skewer.
  3. Season it with some salt and pepper according to your taste.
  4. Prepare 3 dishes: one for beaten eggs, one for flour and one dish for breadcrumbs.
  5. Coat the meat with flour, then dip it in eggs and finish it off by covering it with breadcrumbs. (Roll it in breadcrumbs).
  6. Continue the process with all of the meat skewers.
  7. In a cast iron skillet (or any heavy pan), heat up some oil. (Add oil until it covers the bottom of the skillet.)
  8. When the oil is hot enough, place the coated skewers in the skillet (Try to leave space between each skewer; do not overcrowd them)
  9. Fry the meat skewers on both sides for 2 to 3 minutes each until they are golden brown.
  10. Preheat the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit while you are still frying.
  11. Place aluminum foil to cover the skillet. Then, put it in the preheated oven to continue cooking. This would take 20 minutes.

 

Notes:

  • You are free to fry the skewers in batches; just add oil between each batch if it is needed. (This is simply to give them some space in the skillet.)
  • If you choose to finish up the cooking of the skewers in the oven while they are uncovered, it will only take you 5 minutes.
  • You can put two pieces of pork and one piece of veal in the middle. Or you can put one piece pork and one piece veal.

 

How to serve?

You can serve these delicious meat skewers with:

      • Mashed potatoes.
      • A Polish cucumber salad (Mizeria)
      • Rothkol (Red cabbage)
      • Parsley Potatoes
      • Gravy that is made at home.
