At a party, you have two types of people—those who politely take a scoop of 7-Layer Dip and those who unapologetically plonk next to the bowl with a mound of tortilla chips. I am firmly in the second category. This dip is the first thing to go at any party, and I’ve seen friendships strained over that last scoop. What makes it so irresistible? It’s a perfect blend of creamy, tangy, and savory flavor all stacked together that looks so colorful. No matter the occasion, like a Super Bowl shindig, summer barbecue, or casual family gathering, this dip is a guaranteed hit, and it needs just minutes to make.
The 7-Layer Dip has the benefit of being completely no-fuss. You would not have to cook anything, so just take a bowl, layer, chill, and serve. The base includes a layer of creamy seasoned refried beans followed by a layer of fresh guacamole. After that goes the sour cream, huge salsa, followed by a load of fresh ground coriander. To top it all off, it’s finished with shredded cheese, black olives, and chopped green onions, so it’s got pop! One scoop, and you get a little bit of everything in your chip. Anytime you need a dish that will keep everyone hovering around the snack table, this is it.
Contents
Two cans of refried black or pinto beans
2 teaspoons chili powder.
1 teaspoon ground cumin.
½ teaspoon garlic powder.
Two avocados peeled halved and stoned
1 tbsp lime or lemon juice.
8 oz sour cream.
3/4 cup salsa (your favorite kind).
One and a half cups of shredded cheddar or Monterrey Jack
Black olives (sliced, 6 ounces).
2 green onions, chopped.
One diced Roma tomato for garnish optional.
Tortilla chips, for serving.
Mix the refried beans with chili powder, cumin, garlic powder in a big mixing bowl. Stir well to blend the flavors. Evenly spread the mixture of seasoned beans on a 9×13 pan or serving tray.
Using another bowl, combine the avocados with lime (or lemon) juice till it’s smooth. You can leave some small chunks for texture. Spread the guacamole over the bean layer.
With a spatula, gently spread the sour cream over the guac. Next, add some salsa and lightly spread using a spatula.
Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the salsa layer. Next, put sliced black olives, chopped green onions, and diced Roma tomatoes if using.
Put the dip in the refrigerator before serving it to make the flavors mix. Serve cold with plenty of tortilla chips.
Yes! You can assemble it up to a day in advance. Simply wrap it up and refrigerate until you want to serve. To keep them fresh, don’t add the olives, green onions and tomatoes until just before serving for the best results.
You can’t go wrong with a big bowl of tortilla chips, but you can also serve it with pita chips, sliced bell peppers, celery, or mini tostadas.
Watery salsa is the main culprit. Be sure to pour off any extra liquid from the salsa before layering. Using a thicker, chunkier salsa helps prevent this issue.
Absolutely! If refried beans aren’t your thing, use hummus or a layer of seasoned mashed black beans instead.
This 7-Layer Dip is one of the classic recipes that everyone seems to love. This is great to make, full of flavor, and customizable. If you host a party or need something to munch on, this dip wont last long! So get your bag of chips and dive in. Do remember that the tasty dip will dwindle away!
